The following is a cross-posting from the international Health-Promotion list-serv (Karolinska Institute, Sweden) to click4hp: THE CENTRE FOR RESEARCH IN SOCIAL POLICY LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY CO-OPERATING FOR HEALTH DAY CONFERENCE, TUESDAY, 26 NOVEMBER 1996 at the International Co-operative College, Stanford Hall, Loughborough The Conference is designed to give practitioners the opportunity to share experiences and debate lessons learned from community well-being initiatives. Lord Carter, Chair of the UK Co-operative Council and President of the Pioneer Health Centre Ltd, will give the keynote address. Panels of speakers with pivotal roles in relevant organisations and developments will outline their views and experiences. There will be opportunity for discussion and networking. The Conference grows out of Co-operating for Health: The Potential Contribution of the Co-operative Movement and Community Well-Being Centres to Health of the Nation Activities. This research was funded by The Department of Health and carried out by Dr Katharine Gaskin and Dr Jill Vincent. A copy of the research report will be given to each delegate. The Health of the Nation strategy placed emphasis on disease prevention and health promotion, the formation of health alliances and community-based primary health care services. The inspiration for the concept of community well-being centres is Peckham Pioneer Health Centre. Its essential features were a holistic focus on health rather than disease and the provision of a beautiful environment with facilities whose use depended on the choices of the members. Non-directed self-help and self-determination were guiding principles. Co-operative approaches are characterised by democratic organisation and ownership, with open and voluntary membership and a fair division of investment and distribution of rewards. The fee, which includes lunch is #80[pounds]. A reduced rate of #40 is offered to delegates from voluntary and community organisations.
