Ah ha!  Now I understand why we are talking at cross purposes.  I am not 
claiming that Stigler was a great historian; I am claiming that his 
historical/sociological understanding informed his research agenda (and the 
Chicago counter-revolution).  Perhaps we mean something different by "Whig" 
history; what Stigler wrote about the "kinky demand curve" and monopolistic 
competition does not suggest that he believed that 'truth' would vanquish 
'error.'  He had a very clear understanding about the hierarchy of 
influence.
