===================== HES POSTING ======================

As WEALTH OF NATIONS was published only in 1776, when fighting in the
American revolution was already well underway, it could not have
influenced the earlier work of Paine and others.

But insofar as Smith was in some ways summarizing and consolidating
and elaborating some powerful lines of thought that date back to Locke
and Coke--ideas about progress and a "positive sum world"--you will surely
find some significant parallels with some strains of American ideology.
