The term has been used in conjunction with "social capital"; some of this
research is being carried out at McMaster.

Putnam (Making democracy work ... 1993) defines a "civic" community as being
marked by active participation in public affairs, where the pursuit of the
public good supersedes the private pursuits of individuals.
