The award recognizes LCDC's role in strengthening the capacity for surveillance of emerging and re-emerging diseases in the Americas. Dr. Felix Li, the Acting Director General of LCDC, accepted the award of behalf of the LCDC. LCDC has cooperated with PAHO on many projects in response to the global crisis posed by emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, including AIDS, tuberculosis and diarrheal diseases. LCDC published the Lac Tremblant Declaration, established a global medical intelligence capacity, and collaborated with the PAHO/CIDA SIREVA (Regional Vaccine System) Project to identify the most common strains of Strep pneumonia in children in order to develop a better pneumonia vaccine. LCDC also collaborated with PAHO and CIDA in developing the Regional Strategic Plan to monitor antibiotic resistance among selected pathogens. In November 1996, LCDC hosted the first meeting of PAHO's Regional Task Force on Emerging and Re-emerging Diseases. LCDC has also been designated the executing agency for a CIDA-funded regional effort to strengthen tuberculosis control, beginning in Peru and Ecuador.
