==================== HES POSTING ==================== Call for Papers Southwest Labor Studies Association 24th Annual Conference April 24-26, 1998 St. Edward's University Austin, Texas This year's conference theme is "Organizing: Past, Present, and Future." We invite papers and panels on: working-class culture and activism; union organizing; representations of labor; gender issues; comparative studies of race, religion, or ethnicity in labor organizing; international labor; radical political activities; regional organizing strategies; labor and politics including the effect of trade agreements on workers and the impact of immigration laws on union organizing; bridging the academic and labor communities; economic crisis and change; and community activism. Austin's location near an international border makes it an ideal place to raise interesting questions concerning cross-border organizing or international cooperation among labor movements. Panels on current organizing campaigns and strategies are greatly encouraged. Proposals can include videos, slides, photographic, or musical presentations as well as more traditional papers. While the Southwest Labor Studies Association is a regional organization of academics, activists, and trade unionists, we welcome proposals from national and international scholars on aspects of the conference theme. Please send a brief paper or panel proposal along with a c.v. to Kathleen Brown by November 1, 1997. The annual Southwest Labor Studies Association Conference combines the rich heritage of the labor movement and its current undertakings.
