Twain used fingerprints (thumbprints, to be exact) in an episode of =Life On the Mississippi=, the 'Richter" story about hidden treasure in Napoleon, Arkansas. According to the various histories of police work I have read, that is the earliest mention in a literary text of fingerprint evidence to find a criminal.
