======================== HES POSTING ================= SOCIAL SCIENCE HISTORY ASSOCIATION ANNUAL CONVENTION Chicago, November 19-22, 1998 CALL FOR PAPERS The Social Science History Association will hold its annual conference November 19-22, 1998 at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago. The SSHA is the leading interdisciplinary association in the social sciences. Its annual conference attracts historians as well as sociologists, political scientists, demographers, geographers, economists, and anthropologists from around the world. Sessions cover a wide range of topics and draw from a wide range of qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The SSHA strongly encourages participation from graduate students and recent PhDs as well as more established scholars. We especially welcome panels that reflect the diversity of the academy. Scholars interested in proposing a panel, a paper, or a poster session should contact the representative of the appropriate network or networks on the Program Committee (listed below). All proposals must be received by network representatives NO LATER THAN January 15, 1998. Strong preference will be given to complete panel proposals--including chair, paper presenters, and commentator(s). All proposals must include the following: 1. Title of session and format (panel or poster) 2. Paper titles 3. Name of each participant 4. Participants' department or disciplinary affiliations 5. Participants' institutional affiliations 6. Participants' complete mailing addresses, phone numbers, and fax number (if available) 7. Participants' email addresses 8. Audiovisual needs Unfortunately, submissions with any incomplete information cannot be considered. Individuals may present only one paper and participate in no more than two sessions. Participants in sessions should represent more than one institution and more than one discipline where feasible. PANEL SESSIONS last two hours, of which at least thirty minutes should be reserved for discussion from the floor. PAPER sessions are the most common, with 2-4 panelists and one or two discussants, one of whom may also preside. Presenters must prepare 15-20 minute talks; reading full papers is not feasible. Other formats include ROUNDTABLES on topics of broad interest and AUTHOR MEETS CRITICS sessions. Both include a chair and 3-5 panelists. POSTER EXHIBITS allow scholars to display information on an easel about their research. A "meet the author" time will be scheduled. Corkboards and easels are provided. Posters should be printed on standard 8.5" x 11" paper in large print (>15 point for text) and begin with an abstract of no more than 250 words. Notification of acceptance or rejection of proposals will occur by mid-Spring. At that time, all accepted participants in the SSHA program will be required to pre-register for the conference. Acceptance of panels will thus be conditional: no panel will appear in the preliminary or final program unless all of its participants have registered. Participants also normally join the SSHA. 1998 PROGRAM COMMITTEE CO-CHAIRS: Thomas J.
