Job Posting:  The Micronutrient Initiative announces a 6 Month Consultancy
- Pakistan

Purpose

To provide technical support in the design and implementation of the
micronutrient deficiency control component of the UNICEF/Government of
Pakistan Programme of Cooperation, with particular focus on iron
fortification of wheat flour and other means to alleviate iron deficiency,
and vitamin A fortification of cooking oils and fats.

Terms of Reference

   * Carry out a situation assessment of iron and vitamin A status in
     Pakistan (based on secondary information) and a review of the current
     government, private sector, and nongovernmental (NGO) efforts to
     address iron and vitamin A deficiency (fortification,
     supplementation, information, education and communication);
   * Develop a project proposal on iron fortification of wheat flour and
     on strengthening the current efforts on vitamin A fortification of
     vegetable oil and fats;
   * Provide technical inputs in developing a national anaemia control
     programme for Pakistan;
   * Organise consultation meetings with wheat flour and vegetable oil
     companies to motivate them for iron and vitamin A fortification;
   * Assist in reviewing technology, including equipment needs for
     fortification and identifying appropriate technology and equipment
     for fortification for small, medium and large companies;
   * Develop training programs on iron and vitamin A fortification and
     train master trainers (to be assisted by another expert);
   * Review existing legislation/ regulations and propose new
     legislation/regulations (and/or revisions) on fortification;
   * Develop a monitoring and information system to monitor iron and
     vitamin A fortification;
   * Provide technical inputs in developing an appropriate IEC package for
     the prevention/control of anaemia and vitamin A deficiency.

Reporting/Supervision

The consultant will work closely with and report to Project Officer
Nutrition, UNICEF Islamabad and also keep regular contacts with government
counterparts. The work of the consultant will be monitored through monthly
workplans and reports which will be developed in consultation with
government counterparts.

Education/Skill Requirements

   * Masters degree in Nutrition\Food Sciences
   * 8 - 10 years work experience in the food sciences, food
     fortification, or nutrition fields, with working experience (at least
     2 years) in developing countries
   * Experience in planning and implementing health or nutrition projects
   * Possess a high level of familiarity with international issues
     pertaining to sustainable development, coupled with a proven ability
     to operate with tact and sensitivity to socio-cultural differences.

Languages

   * Fluent in English; Knowledge of Urdu desirable

Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Starting date will be no later than February 1, 1998 for a 6 (six) month
consultancy.
