On tonight's All Things Considered on NPR, there was a brief commentary on the Hartford Ballet Company's new version of the Nutcracker Suite" dubbed "The American Nutcracker." Didn't catch all the names, but apparently the director wanted to Americanize the ballet and some one said he should put Mark Twain in it. He couldn't figure out, I gather, how to make Twain a character but was inspired instead to set the ballet in the Wild West. Don't know if there is more to the story in the way of Twain, but someone up in Harford might be able to help, espcially since the piece was written up in Ye Olde Hartford Current.
