The first edition of this book was written by Ely in 1893. The revised and enlarged second edition was published in 1908, with Allyn Young as the senior editor. The third edition appeared in 1916 and the fourth in 1923. Young died in 1929 but was involved in editing the first 13 chapters of the 1930 edition also.
