On the Andy Griffith Show list I belong to, there was a recent discussion about an interchange between Andy and Floyd. Floyd: Sure is hot. Andy: "Everybody always talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it." You know who said that? Floyd: Calvin Coolidge. Andy: No, Calvin Coolidge didn't say that. It was Mark Twain. Floyd: Well what did Calvin Coolidge say? Pedant that I am, I pointed out to the Andy list that although Andy gets mad at Floyd for thinking it's Calvin Coolidge, Andy (as we all know) is wrong too, that the statement was made by his neighbor in Hartford, Charles Dudley Warner. (This kind of thing sure makes you popular on a Mayberry list!) That set me thinking and feeling sorry for Charles Dudley Warner. Here's probably the most memorable thing he ever said, and everybody (not just Andy) attributes it to Mark Twain. I bet he had a way of attracting many such things to him. No big point--just something to think about on a hot day! ############## John Bird mailto:[log in to unmask] "I got a rude! I bet you ain't never got no rude!" --Ernest T. Bass
