Ann asked Does anyone know of any colleges/universities in the Toronto and/or surrounding area that offers courses dealing with the subjects of conservation and or preservation? I would also be interested in workshops/seminars as well. ________________________________________________________________________ _________________ Sir Sandford Fleming College, Sutherland Campus on Brealey Dr. in Peterborough, Ont. K9J 7B1 has a two year diploma program called Collections Conservation & Management Program. For information on the program contact the Program co-ordinator Gayle McIntyre at one of the following: email: [log in to unmask] phone: (705) 749-5530 ext.1368 fax: (705) 749-5540 This is an excellent program from which I have for a number of years taken student interns on placement and they have been consistently well trained and knowledgable - a testament to the program I feel. Another excellent program is the Master of Art Conservation Degree offered at Queen's University in Kingston. This is a two year program also which offers specialization in Artifacts, Paintings and Painted Objects, Paper Objects, or Research in conservation. I have had very good interns from this program also. For further information contact Ms Krysia Spirydowicz at MAC Program, Art Centre Extension, Queen's Crescent, Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario K7L 3N6. Or by email: [log in to unmask]; tel: (613) 545-2156 or fax: (613) 545-6889. You don't indicate what type of conservation speciality you are interested in but both the Ontario Museums Association and the Archives AssociationOf Ontario from time to time offer workshops with a preservation or conservation theme. George Brown College in Toronto at the St. James Campus also offers a course on care of archival collections as part of the certificate program in archives management. The care of collections course is one night a week for 14 weeks and gives a good basic intrioduction to preservation and archival materials. There are no other training programs in conservation within the Toronto area unless you want to go south of the border to Buffalo. The State University College at Buffalo is the next closest place with a full degree program in conservation. Hope this helps.
