The unpublished excerpt of Twain's manuscript that appears in the New York Times this morning was originally intended for the New York Tribune. I mistakenly alerted Kevin that the article was originally headed for the NY Herald. According to _Mark Twain's Letters, Vol. 3_, p. 698 the article was titled: "The White House Funeral." Written on 7 March [1869] for the New York Tribune, but never published. One sheet of Tribune galley proof, CU-MARK. Does anyone remember seeing the complete text of the article printed elsewhere? Or any ideas of why the Tribune failed to run it? Barb
