I have enjoyed this topic. I have a small contribution, not on the term
but on the concept. A favorite footnote of mine in *Capital* finds Marx
discussing the contention of a German economist (I'm thinking Roscher,
but I don't have the book in front of me) that people who pass by a
bakery really ought to pay something for the delicious smell wafting out
of the establishment. Yes, says an annoyed Marx--"perhaps they could pay
with 'the clink' of a coin."
