Following up on Mat's post (which is in response, I believe, to the intitial 
Sherlock Holmes teaser), there's a somewhat interesting article by J.B. 
Davis, "Sraffa, Wittgenstein, and Neoclassical Economics" in the Cambridge 
Journal of Economics, V. 12, March 1988. Neither Doyle nor Poe is brought 
into th argument, but I'm certain that one of the more imaginative folks on 
this list can figure out a way to do so!
