The quote is attributed to Twain in every source that I have seen. I think
it is taken from private notes so it will be hard to pin down an actual
source.
  The Wit And Wisdom Of Mark Twain is the best volume of pure Twain maxims
that I have seen. There are also some good ones before CHRONOLOGY in Tales
Speeches Sketches and Essays.
