Critical Early Ontario Immigration Records Come Home
Anthony B. Hawke Papers
Thanks to financial support from the Friends of the Arhives of Ontario, the
Archives of Ontario has acquired a set of highly significant Canadian
immigration records from Columbia University. Commonly known as the Toronto
Emigration Office Records, these papers, which date from 1831-1892, were
compiled by Anthony Bewden Hawke and his successors. Hawke was one of the
earliest officials assigned to assist immigrants in settling Upper Canada
(which became Canada West, and then Ontario). He served as Chief Emigrant
Agent for a number of years. This important collection includes official
correspondence, and records relating to assistance with transportation, food
and shelter provided to immigrants. Of particular note are records of
assistance provided to widows and orphans during the difficult Irish famine
time period....

On rapatrie des dossiers d'immigration d'importance historique
Grâce à l'appui financier des Amis des Archives publiques de l'Ontario, les
Archives publiques de l'Ontario ont fait l'acquisition de très importants
dossiers canadiens d'immigration qui appartenaient à la Columbia University.
Les dossiers du Bureau d'émigration de Toronto (Anthony B. Hawke), qui
datent de la période allant de 1831 à 1892, ont été compilés par Anthony
Bewden Hawke et ses successeurs. Hawke était l'un des premiers
fonctionnaires chargés d'aider les immigrants à s'installer dans le
Haut-Canada (qui est devenu le Canada-Ouest, puis l'Ontario). Il a été agent
principal d'émigration pendant plusieurs années. Cette importante collection
comprend de la correspondance officielle et des dossiers sur l'aide apportée
au transport, à l'approvisionnement et à l'hébergement fourni aux
immigrants. On considère particulièrement importants les dossiers relatifs à
l'aide apportée aux veuves et aux orphelins au cours de la difficile période
de famine irlandaise....
