Hello List Members: I would like to reply to a couple of recent postings
asked about the availability of paper conservation courses with information
that may answer the inquiry and be of use to others.
As Ani commented - the CBBAG (Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild)
does offer conservation related workshops from time to time but not anything
regular. The AAO (Toronto chapter and NOAA Chapter) also offered a Basic
Conservation Techniques course in November 2000, taught by myself. Again
though, there is not a regular AAO workshop on practical hands-on
conservation techniques. If AAO members are interested in having such a
course again (through the PDC or a local Chapter) I suggest you contact the
Professional Development Committee with your request. Conservation of paper
is taught in the Collections Conservation and Management Program at Sir
Sandford Fleming College, Peterbough (a 16 month diploma program) and as a
Masters Degree at Queen's University, Kingston in the Master of Art
Conservation Program. Both these programs are designed for training people
to be professional conservators. For preservation (as opposed to
conservation treatment) information visit the newest website page of the CCI
(Canadian Conservation Institute) at www.preservation.gc.ca/flashindex.html
In the United States there are several organizations that regularly offer
workshops on a wide range of conservation and preservation topics and in
various locations across the USA. Below are the URL's for some of the best
I know about. You should check the websites regularly for updates on
workshop descriptions and locations. The list serve ConsDistList also
regularly announces workshops and other training events throughout the
world, since this is an international conservation discussion list. You can
