A _locus classicus_ for a quote about  `economics and engineers' is Pigou's 
admonition  
 
``While it is natural and right in the present deplorable state of the 
world's affairs  that many economists should seek to play a part in guiding 
conduct, that is not their primary business. They are ...  engineers, not 
engine drivers.'' (Theory of Unemployment, 1933, p.v, preface).  
 
In a recent book (Gerhard Michael Ambrosi: Keynes, Pigou, and Cambridge 
Keynesians (Palgrave Macmillan: Houndmills, Basingstoke etc.) 2003, 
pp.30-31), I argue that this passage is a derogation of Keynes and his 
_Essays in Persuasion_, re-published in 1930 - and, of course also of 
Keynes' intensive advisory committee work around that time.
