SLC's relationship with Clarence Rice was both medical and social, of course, and some dates related to medical care are available.

Consistent with the 1885 date noted by Barb, we know that Clemens and Rice certainly knew each other in 1887, when Clemens reported “Dr. Rice cut my palate.” [N&J-3, 332] On October 14, 1887, Clemens was frustrated with the slowness of his recovery from the surgery, reporting that “I had my palate cut out several days ago, and it promises to never get well again.” [Ltrs-Publs, 235] In August of 1888, Clemens wrote a check to Rice for $105 for professional services to Clemens, Livy, and Susy. [N&J-3, 477]

I just checked Clarence Rice's biography as reprinted in TWAINIAN over multiple issues in 1974 (reprinted from KANSAS CITY STAR, November 1925).
Rice dates his friendship with Clemens dating from 1885. Thus, Fears appears correct in stating Clemens was referring to the first meeting with Henry Rogers (aboard a yacht) dating the first meeting earlier than the September 1893 date when Rice introduced them. Again, a thorough search through MTDBD at the Elmira website might provide the clues about the yacht trip.
