Kevin D. Hoover's comments are very appropriate. There was no intent to demean those who
suffer from autism. The metaphor was indeed quite descriptive of many neoclassicals.
Moreover, far too much of academic discourse is devoted to an elaborate, even self-
indulgent, effort to avoid hurting anyone's feelings. If we are to say anything of
significance, then somebody, somewhere is sure to take offense. What has academe become,
some sort of group therapy?
