DETROIT — City records stored in various locations around the city are
now safely housed in the newly formed City of Detroit Archives and
Records Management Division. The grand opening event on April 29 marked
the official opening of the City department devoted entirely to the
preservation of Detroit’s civic history.
The offices, located on the 16th floor of the Cadillac Towers, will
serve as a public resource center with access to codes and ordinances,
petitions and complaints, budget information, proposals and information
dealing with the City of Detroit.
It was months into her tenure as City Clerk when Janice Winfrey realized
that vital historical records had been stored for years without much
consideration to order or accessibility. After a massive recovery
effort, Winfrey says she committed herself to the idea of a permanent
archive office. There was no question what the first step toward that
goal would be.
“As the official keeper of records, I needed to figure out how to get
them into one place,” Winfrey told the Michigan Citizen during a recent
tour of the new office.
