The iSchool Institute offers a half-day workshop Copyright: What's New?
with Jean Dryden on Nov 23 (Toronto) and Nov 29 (Ottawa) 9:00pm-12:30pm.
After a decade of discussion, and three failed attempts, Canada has
amended its Copyright Act to address copyright in the digital
environment. This half-day workshop identifies the changes that are of
particular relevance to librarians, archivists, educators, and
consumers. Of particular significance are changes to the rules relating
to photographs, the so-called “digital locks” provisions, changes to the
exceptions for libraries, archives and museums, and educational
institutions, and protection for routine consumer activities such as
time-shifting.
Learning Outcomes:
Knowledge of the key amendments to the Copyright Act that relate to
libraries, archives and educational institutions
Key topics covered:
Background and purpose of the amendments
Changes to the ownership and term rules for photographs
Protection for technological protection measures ("digital locks")
The addition of education (and parody/satire) to fair dealing
Changes to the exceptions for libraries, archives and museums
Changes to the exceptions for educational institutions
Prerequisite:
Copyright Demystified or Copyright: Understanding and Applying the Rules
or equivalent
Target Audience:
Librarians, archivists, and educators who wish to know more about the
changes to the Copyright act and the implications of those changes for
institutional practice.
