A topic I know something about ! 

The text of anything published in his lifetime is certainly in the public domain; although "notes at the bottom of the page" or front matter, etc. might not be, as these could be more recent. (As with the editions of Shakespeare's plays that are currently published for schools...)

Subject: Twain and public domain

ONe of our local libraries has a new special printer and intends to print up
a small sampler to demonstrate what it can do.   I was asked if I knew
if a story of his was in public domain or if one had to ask permission of
the Mark Twain Papers.  (Story was "How to Write a Story")  I have no
idea!  Could any of you experts tell me the answer to pass on?
