I thought I would reply to the whole list regarding Mr. Dadosky's
inquiry as my comments may be useful to others. In general it is
preferable to store paper and parchment documents flat, rather than
rolled or folded, whenever possible. Unrolling and re-rolling documents
results over time in physical damage. If the paper and parchment is, or
becomes, brittle with age then cracks and tears are also more apt to
develop. There are various methods for humidifying and flattening
documents but, depending on the condition of them and the materials
involved it might be advisable to have a conservator examine them in
order to provide appropriate guidance on how to flatten them safely.

For storage once flattened, if the documents are in sound physical
condition, I would recommend enclosing them in acid free file folders
and then an acid free document box. If the documents are larger than
legal size a flat acid free print box can be used. Alternatively
oversized documents could also be housed in acid free folders and stored
in map cabinet drawers.

If you would like further information Mr. Dadosky feel free to contact
me off the list.
