Some of the founding fathers of economics as a profession and an academic
subject, e.g. Alfred Marshall, were also active in the creation of library
catalogs. One of my students is interested in the reasons behind the
structure of the library catalogs in economics from the beginning of the
century (1890-1910). Which models did they use? 1) The structure from
courses in economics? 2) The contents of the main textbooks? 3) The reasons
and methods of the time behind subject catalogs in general?

Any literature about this issue will be highly appreciated.

Yours sincerely,
Jorgen R. Elkjaer
