Health, Agriculture Ministers to Meet in Sao Paulo on Foot-and-Mouth
Disease, Zoonoses

Washington, 30 April, 2001 (PAHO) -- Experts and authorities from 32
countries meet this week in Brazil to discuss policies to prevent and
control foot-and-mouth disease, zoonoses such as mad cow disease, and food
safety. The meeting, planned by the Pan American Health Organization, will
be held at the Renaissance Hotel in Sao Paulo, Brazil May 2 to 4. More:

The PAHO Research Coordination Program and the Harvard Center for Society
and Health have created this joint initiative to strengthen research
capacity for the study of health inequities in Latin America and the
Caribbean.

This will be carried out through internships aimed at research training
within the context of a research project involving quantitative data on
inequities and producing a scientific article for publication. Interns will
spend an academic year at Harvard and will participate in various
activities within the context of project development.

announced today that Health Canada, in conjunction with the Department of
Foreign Affairs and International Trade, will lead a Canadian delegation to
the World Health Organization in Geneva on April 30 for six days of
negotiations on an international tobacco control convention.

Health Canada's Research Management and Dissemination Division (RMDD),
situated within the Applied Research and Analysis Directorate of the
Information, Analysis and Connectivity Branch, is pleased to announce the
first Request for Letters of Intent (LOI) for Health Canada's Health Policy
Research Program (HPRP).

The HPRP is intended to generate quality extramural policy-relevant
research to meet the specific needs of Health Canada. In conjunction with
in-house policy research, the HPRP will build the evidence base for
decision-making on key policy issues of concern to Health Canada over the
next two to five years. It will help bridge the gap between what is known
and what is applied in policies and programs relevant to the department
(and to other health policy makers).

natural health products. Documents presented for this second round of
consultations include the next draft of the proposed regulatory framework,

Bernstein, President of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR),
announced today a Government of Canada investment of over $234 million to
fund health research across the country, through CIHR. Over one-quarter of
the funded researchers will advance our knowledge of mental health,
neuroscience and addiction issues.

La Division de la gestion et de diffusion de la recherche de Sante Canada
(DGDR), qui fait partie de la Direction de la recherche appliquee et de
l'analyse (DRAA), direction generale de l'information, de l'analyse et de
la connectivite, est heureuse d'annoncer la premiere demande de lettres
d'intention (IL) pour le Programme de recherche sur la politique en matiere
de sante (PRPS).

Le PRPS a pour but de faire produire des recherches extra-muros de qualite
sur les politiques afin de repondre aux besoins particuliers de Sante
Canada. Conjointement avec la recherche effectuee a l'interne sur les
politiques, le PRPS permettra de creer et d'appuyer, au cours des deux a
cinq prochaines annees, la prise de decisions sur les principales
questions strategiques pertinentes a Sante Canada. Il aidera a combler
l'ecart entre ce que l'on sait et ce que l'on met en pratique dans les
politiques et les programmes interessant le Ministere (et autres
decideurs dans le domaine de la sante).

ont annonce aujourd'hui l'investissement de plus de 234 millions de dollars
par le gouvernement du Canada pour subventionner, par le truchement d'IRSC,
la recherche en sante dans l'ensemble du Canada. Plus du quart des fonds
consacres aux chercheurs en sante permettront de faire progresser nos
connaissances dans le domaine de la sante mentale, des neurosciences et de

Le Programme de cooperation institutionnelle de l'ACDI a pour but
d'ameliorer le niveau de vie des populations des pays en developpement.

Afin d'atteindre ce but, le Programme appuie des initiatives qui
contribuent a renforcer les institutions et a soutenir les populations et
les communautes des pays en developpement. Il comporte trois volets : le
Programme des institutions d'education, le Programme des organisations
associatives et specialisees, et le Programme de bourses et de
l'environnement.
