World No Tobacco Day Focuses on Second-hand Smoking
World No Tobacco Day 2001 will be marked on 31 May. This year's campaign is
centered on the issue of second-hand smoking, also known as passive smoking
or involuntary smoking.

Ruben Pancca of Bolivia Receives Clarence Moore Award for Voluntarism in
Health Services
The Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) presented this
year's Clarence H. Moore Award to Ruben Pancca for his outstanding work,
leadership, and dedication to improving health, the environment, and
education and basic services in Cochabamba, Bolivia. The award acknowledges
outstanding voluntary contributions by NGOs or individuals in areas of
health relevant to the programme of work of PAHO. This year the Award was
shared with the Cancer Society of Bahamas.

Michael Smith Prize in Health Research
To honour Dr. Smith, who shared the Nobel prize for Chemistry in 1993, the
Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) have established the Michael
Smith Prize in Health Research (formerly, the Michael Smith Award for
Excellence).
To be eligible for consideration, individuals must have at least 10 years
of experience as an independent investigator since completion of their
formal training and hold a position within a Canadian academic, hospital,
not-for-profit organization, governmental institution or affiliated
research institution. The winner will be selected from not more than three
finalists, on the recommendation of an international peer review committee.
Each candidate must be nominated by a member of the Canadian health
research community and be endorsed by the executive head of the candidate's
institution. Candidates may be nominated on more than one occasion provided
that they still meet the eligibility requirements. Nominations must be
received by November 1.

Regional IDRC/Ford Ecosystem Approaches to Human Health Competition -
Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Request for Proposals - 2001

The Ecosystem Approaches to Human Health Program Initiative of the
International Development Research Centre (IDRC) supports transdisciplinary
research that focuses on the development of ecosystem management
interventions. The goal is to improve human health and well-being
while maintaining or improving the capacity of the ecosystem to provide a
desired range of products and services.
Similarly, through its programs on community and resource development and
on reproductive health, the Cairo Office of the Ford Foundation seeks to
reduce poverty and injustice and improve human health by enhancing the
ability of communities to protect, build, and deploy assets in an equitable
and environmentally sustainable manner.
To maximize benefits of these programs to the region, IDRC and the Ford
Foundation jointly created an Ecosystem Approaches to Human Health Regional
Fund for the Middle East and North Africa. The proposals must be submitted
by 5:00 PM EST, Friday September 28, 2001 at IDRC, Ottawa, Canada complete
with all attachments.

Canadian NGOs unite in international children's rights campaign
Four Canadian non-governmental organizations (NGOs) announced, on April 26,
2001, their
united participation in Say Yes for Children, one of the most comprehensive
international children's rights campaigns ever undertaken.
UNICEF Canada, Save the Children Canada, Foster Parents Plan (PLAN
International) and World Vision Canada have joined forces to encourage
Canadians from all walks of life to express their support for improving the
lives of children everywhere through the Say Yes campaign. Describing
themselves as the United Voice in Canada for the Global Movement for
Children, the four NGOs are spearheading the initiative in this country.

Consultation on CIDA's Draft Action Plan on Health and Nutrition
CIDA is strengthening its programming in health, nutrition, water and
sanitation over the next five years as part of its new focus on social
development. The draft health and nutrition action plan presents CIDA's
response to the global challenges of health, nutrition, water and
sanitation. To make a real impact on the health and nutrition of the
world's poorest people, CIDA must make strategic decisions about its future
work.
Because discussion and debate are both welcome and crucially needed, we are
inviting you to participate in the current online consultation of the
health and nutrition action plan scheduled until Thursday, June 14, 2001.
The consultation is intended to be as broad as possible, and is designed to
seek comments and analysis from CIDA's domestic and international partners.
Please pass this message along to others you think might be interested in
participating in the online consultation process.
To facilitate discussion on the draft action plan, the moderator will pose
a question at the start of each week. Your comments will be forwarded via

The Aga Khan Foundation Canada is seeking a
Consultant, Proposal development and resource mobilization
The Consultant will assist the Department of Community Medicine at the
Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (MGIMS), Sewagram, District of
Wardha, Maharashtra State, India, in preparing a proposal to a major
institutional donor for a project aimed at improving the well being of
children under five years and women in the reproductive age group.
This will involve: reviewing guidelines produced by the Government of India
and the specific donor, developing a plan of action for training on
proposal development, carrying out this training and providing technical
support and assistance and during the development of the proposal. It is
expected that this project will develop the Department's capacity to
mobilize future financial resources.
The anticipated contract duration is 12 to 16 weeks. Deadline for

En l'honneur du Dr Smith, qui a recu en partage le prix Nobel de chimie en
1993,
IRSC (Instituts de recherche en sante du Canada) a cree le prix de la
recherche en sante Michael Smith (auparavant la bourse d'excellence Michael
Smith).
Pour etre admissibles, les candidats doivent avoir au moins 10 ans
d'experience a titre de chercheur independant depuis la fin de leur
formation universitaire et occuper un emploi dans une universite, un
hopital, un organisme sans but lucratif, un organisme gouvernemental ou
un etablissement de recherche affilie du Canada. Le gagnant sera choisi
parmi trois finalistes, sur la recommandation d'un comite international
d'examen par les pairs.
Les candidatures doivent etre proposees par des membres du milieu de la
recherche en sante du Canada, et approuvees par le directeur administratif
de l'etablissement ou travaille le candidat. On peut proposer la
candidature d'une meme personne a plusieurs reprises a condition qu'elle
satisfasse encore aux criteres d'admissibilite.

L'initiative de programme Ecosystemes et sante humaine du Centre de
recherches pour le developpement international (CRDI) appuie la recherche
transdisciplinaire axee sur l'elaboration d'interventions de gestion des
ecosystemes. Son but est d'ameliorer la sante et le bien-etre humains
tout en preservant ou en ameliorant la capacite des ecosystemes de fournir
un eventail souhaite de produits et de services.
De meme, le bureau du Caire de la Fondation Ford cherche, par ses
programmes qui portent sur le developpement communautaire, la mise en
valeur des ressources et la sante genesique, a reduire la pauvrete et
l'injustice et a ameliorer la sante humaine en rehaussant la capacite des
collectivites de proteger, de construire et de deployer des biens d'une
facon equitable et viable sur le plan environnemental.
Afin de maximiser les retombees de ces programmes dans la region, le CRDI
et la Fondation Ford ont cree conjointement le Fonds regional Ecosystemes
et sante humaine pour le Moyen-Orient et l'Afrique du Nord. Les

droits des enfants
Quatre organisations non gouvernementales (ONG) canadiennes ont annonce
le 26 avril dernier, leur participation commune a Dites oui pour les
enfants, une des campagnes internationales en matiere de droits des enfants
les plus completes jamais entreprises.
UNICEF Canada, Aide a l'enfance - Canada, le Plan de parrainage (PLAN
International) et Vision Mondiale Canada unissent leurs forces pour inciter
les Canadiens de tous les horizons a exprimer leur soutien a l'amelioration
des conditions de vie des enfants du monde entier par l'intermediaire de la
campagne Dites oui pour les enfants. Se decrivant comme Une voix unie au
Canada pour le Mouvement mondial en faveur des enfants, les quatre ONG sont

L'ACDI renforcera ses programmes en matiere de sante, de nutrition,
d'approvisionnement en eau et d'hygiene au cours des cinq prochaines annees
dans le cadre de ses nouvelles priorites de developpement social. L'ebauche
du Plan d'action sur la sante et la nutrition fait connaitre les positions
de l'ACDI au regard des defis mondiaux concernant la sante, la nutrition,
l'approvisionnement en eau et l'hygiene. Pour agir effectivement sur la
sante et la nutrition des plus demunis de la planete, l'ACDI doit prendre
des decisions strategiques a l'egard de ses futurs projets.
Parce qu'une discussion est souhaitee et necessaire, nous vous invitons a
participer a la consultation en ligne sur l'ebauche du Plan d'action sur la
sante et la nutrition qui est en cours jusqu'au jeudi 14 juin 2001.
