Twain, Huck and Racism

The Mark Twain House, in collaboration with the Hartford Public Library and
the Connecticut Civil Liberties Union, brings Dr. Jocelyn Chadwick-Joshua to
Hartfod to celebrate Banned Books Week, September 27-October 3.

Author and teacher Dr. Chadwick-Joshua, Director of the American Studies
program at the Dallas Institute for the Humanites, has spoken at The Mark
Twain House's 1994 symposium on bookbanning and the 1995 teacher's institute
"Teaching Huck Finn."

She has written and lectured frequently on racially sensitive literature,
especially Twain's _Adventures of Huckleberry Finn._  In her newest book,
_The Jim Dilemma: Reading Race in Huckleberry Finn, Dr. Chadwick-Joshua
defends Twain's novel as a classroom classic.

Join us on October 1st to hear selections from Twain's _Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn_, consistently challenged since its publication in 1884,
and to hear Dr. Chadwick-Joshua discuss her ongoing defense of this
controversial novel.
