Call for Papers: Colloquium on 
 
                       "Text and Economics" 
 
              (16-18 May 2002, University of Antwerp) 
 
The colloquium aims at providing a forum for innovative, 
interdisciplinary research and discussion on the interface between text 
studies and economics. Contributors are invited to explore in what 
way methods and insights from economics can contribute to the 
analysis of texts as well as what role text studies can play in economic 
research. 
 
Possible themes include: 
 
- the discourse of economics (narrative, metaphor, style, rhetoric, 
etc.) 
- the economy in literature 
- the economics of language and literature 
- economic aspects of institutional and professional discourse 
- new economic insights from literature. 
 
We welcome submissions from scholars in a variety of fields, such as 
economics, literary studies, linguistics, pragmatics, philosophy, 
sociology, law, etc. Both theoretical and empirical papers using a 
wide range of methods will be considered. The invited speakers will 
include Deirdre McCloskey (University of Illinois at Chicago & 
Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam) and Cathérine Labio (Yale 
University). 
 
The colloquium is organised by UFSIA, University of Antwerp 
(Belgium), in the framework of the celebration of "150 years UFSIA". 
It brings together researchers from the Department of Language and 
Communication and from the Department of Economics of the Faculty 
of Applied Economics UFSIA-RUCA, which is an interdisciplinary 
faculty located in the centre of Antwerp. The organizing committee 
consists of Toon Braeckman (KULAK-KULeuven), Ingeborg Dusar 
(UFSIA-RUCA), Guido Erreygers (UFSIA-RUCA), Geert Jacobs 
(UFSIA-RUCA), Stef Slembrouck (Universiteit Gent), and Toon 
Vandevelde (KULeuven). 
 
 
Submission Guidelines 
 
Proposals should cntain: 
 
1. the title of the paper 
2. the author's name, affiliation, postal address, e-mail, and phone 
number 
3. an abstract of 500 to 1,000 words. 
 
Proposals can be submitted by e-mail to the conference organizers at

The submission deadline is 30 September 2001. Contributors will be 
notified of acceptance by 31 October 2001. Final papers are due by 
1 April 2002. 
 
Presentations will be 30 minutes in length followed by a 15-minute 
discussion period.
