There is in fact a Becker-inspired "economics of religion," associated with Laurence
Iannoccone among others. See, for example, his J. Econ Lit article of 1998. Carmel
Chiswick has also written on this topic.[Disclaimer: I have no specific knowledge of or
special interest in this literature--I just know it exists].
