Colloquium on the Economic Thought of Jeremy Bentham
January 26 - 27, 2002
Tokyo Metropolitan University

Call for Papers

Since the publication of W. Stark's edition of Jeremy Bentham's Economic Writings (3
vols., George Allen & Unwin, 1952-1954), enormous developments have taken place in Bentham
studies. The new definitive edition of The Collected Works of Jeremy Bentham, published by
Oxford University Press, which is being produced by the Bentham Project, University
College London, has provided the basis for a major reassessment of Bentham's thought.

The year 2002 is the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of the first two volumes of
Stark's edition. The anniversary is being marked by this colloquium which will provide an
exciting opportunity to shed new light on the economic thought of Jeremy Bentham. As the
first volume of Bentham's Writings on the Poor Laws in the Collected Works has recently
been published, the connection of his economic thought with his ideas on pauperism will
provide one of the main themes.

The colloquium will take place at Tokyo Metropolitan University on January 26-27, 2002.
For participants from abroad, a room with en-suite facilities will be available at the
International House of Tokyo Metropolitan University. Please send paper proposals (200
words in length) with affiliation, mailing address and e-mail address to <fukagai-
[log in to unmask]> or the address below before 31 October 2001. There is a
possibility that participants from abroad may receive some degree of financial support
from the organizers of the colloquium.

Professor Philip Schofield (UCL, UK), Dr. Paul Kelly (LSE, UK), Professor Annie Cot
(Paris-I, France), Dr. Nathalie Sigot (Besanson, France), Professor Marco Guidi (Brescia,
Italy), Professor Takuo Dome (Osaka, Japan) and Professor Yasunori Fukagai (TMU, Japan)
are already scheduled to present papers.
