I have a question for those Mandeville scholars who are out there, I'm
sure. I am teaching him in a history of thought class (I think he is very
important for understanding Smith's project; Smith wanted to take the
ethical sting out of Man-devil, while accepting huge chunks of the analysis
that led to the sting--which accounts for big incoherencies in his work.)
Anyway the question is about the last line of the Grumbling Hive; We cannot
understand the reference to Acorns in: "they, that would revive/ a Golden
Age, must be as free/ for Acorns, as for Honesty." Thanks!
