O'Connor, Michael J. L. 1944. Origins of Academic Economics in the United 
States (New York: Garland, 1974) says that most early professors of econ. 
were the president of the university, who wanted to be able to satisfy 
merchants who were potential donors.  Many also were profs. of moral 
philosphy.
