As a religious person, Adam Smith would have known (as would all his contemporary readers,
religious or irreligious) of the last temptation of Jesus in which he is taken to the top
of the very high mountain and is told that, if he will only worship Satan, he can have all
the kingdoms of the world and all their splendour ....
 
This is fairly early in the Gospel of Matthew, if I recollect aright....
