On April 19, CNS published a notice regarding network service
interruptions this summer (see below). Due to circumstances beyond
our control, the outage originally schedule for Sunday May 12, has
been rescheduled to July 14 00:00hrs - 06:00hr. There will be no
outage on May 12. All other planned service interruptions remain as
scheduled.

Subject: Summer Network Service Interruptions
In mid February 2002, a widespread vulnerability was discovered in
SNMP. The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is used by
Computing and Network Services to monitor our core network devices
to ensure a stable and reliable network. When the vulnerability was
announced, CNS took steps to protect our network from attack.
However those protective actions often required that we shut down
SNMP completely, hindering our ability to actively monitor the
University's network. Since the discovery of the SNMP
vulnerability, software upgrades for most computer operating systems
and network devices have been released. Unfortunately upgrading the
software on our core network devices is a major undertaking that
will require a number of outages.
The following service interruptions are scheduled in order to
upgrade the core network devices:
Sunday May 12: 00:00hrs - 06:00hrs
During this period there will be several service interruptions
affecting all York network users.
Sunday May 26: 00:00hrs - 06:00hrs
During this period there will be several service interruptions
affecting Internet access for all York network users. There will
also be several service interruptions affecting network traffic
through the Administrative Firewall. No other network services
should be affected by these interruptions.
Sunday June 2: 00:00hrs - 06:00hrs
During this period there will be several service interruptions
affecting Keele Campus ResNet users, and users in the Computer
Science Building.
Sunday June 9: 00:00hrs - 06:00hrs
During this period there will be several service interruptions
affecting all Keele campus network users, as well as Internet access
for all York network users.
Due to construction and renovations in the Steacie Science Library
building over the summer, there will be a network and central
computing services interruption of anywhere from 24 to 48 hours in
early August. More information about this service interruption,
including exact dates and times will be published in the near
future.
More information about the SNMP vulnerability mentioned above is
available at http://www.yorku.ca/infosec/Advisories/SNMPVuln.htm
Questions or concerns about this note, should be directed to
