I have been asked by our museum manager to provide any input regarding the
disposition of archival holdings should the Region cease to operate its
museum facilities (a strictly hypothetical proposition!). In order to meet
provincial granting regulations, the Region (and other municipalities and
institutions) must adopt a new policy which provides for the dissolution
of the museum's assets and liabilities should it ceased to operate. I
understand that the Province enacted such a regulation to prevent the
wanton sale of collections. Other than including a provision which would
dictate the transfer of archival holdings to the Region's Corporate
Archives or to another suitable regional archives, does anyone have any
advice regarding the prudent disposition of archival holdings if an
institution ceases to exist? Does anyone have a formal dissolution policy
for their institution and would they be willing to share it?
Thanks,
