In relation to David Mitch remark on Friedman's attribution of the 
statement to Alfred Marshall I have found in my notes that much earlier 
something similar to: "It is not possible to be a good economist being only 
en economist" was written by John Stuart Mill in "Auguste Comte's 
Positivism". But once more I do not know detailed references.
