Nicolas Baudeau (1730-1792) : An "economist philosopher" and "instructor" in the Age of
Enlightenment

Symposium organized by the University of Tours (France)

Tours - Amboise, 18-19 May 2006

In the second half of the 18th century, Nicolas Baudeau, theologian and economist, found
his place in the history manuals of economic thought as founder of the first economic
review published in France en 1765 (Les Ephmrides du Citoyen). Well known for having
opposed the physiocratic theory before rallying to it, this independent and enlightened
character, ecclesiastic and historian was then recognized as an "economist". From Amboise
where he was born to Chancelade where he was appointed professor of theology, Nicolas
Baudeau went to teach theology in Paris before turning to Economics and Social sciences.
His intellectual career was rich and varied as were his publications.

The object of this conference is to analyse the different aspects of Nicolas Baudeau
activities : his activity of editor of the Ephmrides, his political, theological and
economic activities and his conversion to physiocratic theories (food supplies, analyse of
the Tableau Economique, questions of taxation, .), his work concerning history, law,
philosophy, social problems, politics (education.), and more technical problems (flour-
milling and bakery). Finally, his analysis of the events in Poland based on his experience
during the different visits he made to this country.
