Celebrate Archives Week!

October 20-27 is New England Archives Week.
Culminating with the New England Archivists
organization’s fall meeting in New Haven, Conn., New
England Archives Week is a celebration of the
importance of original historical documents. All
kinds of historical documents have value, whether it
is the original draft of the Constitution of your
state or a photograph of your great-great-grandfather
in his Civil War uniform, or even the minutes of a
local Parent-Teacher Organization meeting from the
1990s.

Archives Week bookmarks being created by NEA will be
distributed to many public libraries, historical
societies, and archives, and will be available free to
the public—keep your eyes peeled for them!

If you are in the Greater Boston area, stop by our
“Archives on the Road” event, October 22 from
6:00-7:30 at the Codman Square Branch of the Boston
Public Library, 690 Washington St., Dorchester. Bring
your old photograph, letter, or other documents and
have a professional archivist examine it with you.
Learn about how to preserve it, discover something
about its historical value, and pick up handouts on
archival supplies, consultants, and other resources.

In addition, NEA encourages individuals and
repositories responsible for acquiring, preserving, or
making historical documents available to host an
event, distribute a flyer, or prepare an
exhibit—Archives Week is about you!
