ARMA TORONTO CHAPTER - MARCH 2002 EVENT

ARMA Toronto Chapter Board of Directors is very pleased to announce that our
March event is being held in conjunction with the
Information Highways 2002 Conference and Showcase

EVENT: SEMINAR - INTERMEDIATE TO ADVANCED LEVEL

TOPIC: ARCHIVES AND RECORDS MANAGEMENT: A HAPPY UNION OR A SHOTGUN
MARRIAGE?

SPEAKERS: MICHAEL MOIR AND ROBIN KEIRSTEAD

Michael Moir began work as an archivist in 1983, and was appointed Records
Manager/Archivist for the Toronto Harbour Commissioners in 1985. He joined
the Metropolitan Toronto Archives in 1995 as Manager of Archives and
Outreach, and in May 1998 was appointed Director of Corporate Records
Systems and City Archivist for the new City of Toronto. He instructed
courses on archival practices and the management of archival repositories at
George Brown College between 1991 and 1997, and has made presentations to
professional associations on a wide variety of topics including the
automation of archival functions, user fees, descriptive standards, and the
impact of municipal amalgamation on records management.

Robin Keirstead received his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in history from
Acadia University, his Master of Arts, also in history, from Queen's
University, and his Master of Archival Studies from the University of
British Columbia. Upon graduation he joined the B.C. Government Records
Management Branch as a records analyst. He has also worked as an archivist
with the Legal Archives of B.C., senior archivist with the Archives of
Ontario, Manager, Corporate Records & Archives (later Manager, Corporate
Publishing & Information Management) at the Regional Municipality of
Waterloo, and Manager of Corporate Records for the City of Kitchener. In
June 2001, Robin became the first University Archivist at the University of
Western Ontario where he is currently implementing a fully integrated
records management and archives program. Robin has presented papers and
published articles on a number of records management, archives, and access
and privacy topics. He has also taught archives and records management
courses at Simon Fraser University, George Brown College and Mohawk College.
He is also a regular instructor in the Core Workshop Program of the Archives
Association of Ontario.

DESCRIPTION:

Michael Moir - Analysts and Archivists: A Coordinated Approach to Managing
Corporate Records

Michael will examine the relationship of Corporate Records Services and
Archival Services as components of the Corporate Records Management Program
at the City of Toronto. While records analysts and archivists have very
different approaches to service delivery, the integration of their work can
provide important benefits for the management of information throughout its
life cycle. After reviewing the scope and organization of records
management functions at the City, Michael will highlight the implications of
an integrated program for inventory projects, classification, retention
scheduling, preservation management, and the conversion of records to
different storage formats.

Robin Keirstead - Records Managers and Archivists: From Sibling Rivalry to
One Big Happy Family

The traditional relationship between records managers and archivists is
often viewed as two solitudes, each reflecting different cultures and
addressing potentially competing goals and priorities. This approach has
many implications for the professions themselves, the organizations for
which they work, and for the records for which they are responsible.
Drawing on personal work experience in both fields, Robin will discuss how
perpetuating this dichotomy creates artificial barriers that can reduce work
efficiency and also perpetuate rivalries for scarce resources and even
scarcer professional recognition and respect. Using the new program at the
University of Western Ontario as a model, Robin will present practical
suggestions on how to remove these barriers both organizationally and
functionally in order to achieve fully integrated records programs.
