At the risk of boring some of you who may not care if Mylar D is alive and
well I am posting some more updates on availability of this product and
information on substitute materials for conservation use.
Mylar D is probably available for some time to come from Light Impressions.
Iunderstand they bought up a large amount
when they found it was going to be discontinued. Contact info is Light

Most all of the major archival material suppliers have a quantity of Mylar D
on hand and most carry the Melinex 516 (also suitable for encapsulation of
documents). They may automatically substitute the Melinex 516 for Mylar D
unless notified. If you wish to know what you are receiving you should call
your supplier or specify this in your order.
And finally the message copies below was recently posted to a conservation
list by a staff member from the Library of Congress Conservation Division,
which is currently conducting analytical testing on various types of
plastics to determine other products that are suitable substitutes for Mylar
D by Dupont for encapsulation and other archival purposes.

Library of Congress Amended Update on Acceptance of
Polyester Film Products for Use in Paper Encapsulation
In a recent announcement, we indicated that polyethylene
terephthalate (PET) films such as DuPont Teijin Films Mylar D and
Melinex 516 are no longer being manufactured. This was incorrect.
We have been informed by a DuPont Teijin Films representative that,
while Mylar D has been discontinued, Melinex 516 is still available
through DuPont Teijin Films U.S. Limited Partnership, Wilmington,
DE.
Other films, which the Library will be testing for appropriate
encapsulation and archival purposes, are also available from DuPont

Another acceptable PET film is Hostaphan 43SM film, made by
Mitsubishi Polyester Film, LLC, of Greer, SC.
