Hi Jim and list,

I agree that having insurance to cover the irreplaceable is probably not a good use of funds however I do think that having insurance to cover the costs incurred in the salvage and ultimate preservation of the collection is a very good use of funds. Most standard commercial insurance policies cover replacement value (I know that's what we had here) which isn't applicable to the irreplaceable. If you explain your needs and requirements to an insurer however you can usually find a company who will cover the infinitely-more-useful costs associated with salvage and remediation of records in the event that a disaster hits. After I explained why replacement costs were not really suitable for my area, I was able to get insurance that will cover the cost of salvage teams, equipment, freezers, storage and remediation - which is very useful should bad things happen. I'm a 'team' of one here so in the event of a disaster, knowing I can hire the people and equipment I need to preserve the records makes me feel much more comfy.

I would be interested in seeing what percentage of museums and archives have collections insurance, and perhaps there might be an interesting debate on this issue.

Most institutions I have worked for do not carry insurance on the collections. The collections are priceless. Or maybe you could say they are worthless, except as scrap paper or scrap metal.

Subject: [Arcan-l] Insurance for archives

Good morning:

I am looking into renewing our insurance again and at the present time we do not have collections insurance. We just have liability insurance / business policy. There is no insurance for the archival records for emergency storage or restoration services. I been checking into this and I see that Marsh Canada offers collections, directors, and liability insurance to the members of the Canadian Museum Association (CMA). Are they members of the CMA? What do other small archives do for insurance? Do most archives always have collections insurance and if so, through what company?

Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Jean Eiers-Page
