ARCHIVES ASSISTANT (1 Contract Position)
JOB POSTING # DBW0202

DURATION:       August or September 2002 for 102 working days
HOURS:          7 hours per day
SALARY:         $15.62 per hour (includes vacation pay)

The University of Western Ontario Archives  is seeking a qualified
applicant for a contract Archives Assistant.  The successful applicant
will arrange the official records of four former University Presidents,
spanning the period 1914-1977, carry out basic conservation as required,
and prepare appropriate finding aids in accordance with the Rules for
Archival Description (RAD).  The contract will last approximately 5
months and is funded in part by a grant from the Canadian Council of
Archives under the Control of Holdings Program.

Qualifications and Skills:
Must have a university degree in archival studies or a related field
(eg, history or library and information science) with courses in
archival studies.
Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
Must have experience in the use of Windows 98 and WordPerfect.
Must have excellent organizational skills and be able to work without
constant supervision.
Must have practical experience arranging and describing archival
materials using the Rules for Archival Description (RAD).
Preference will be given to applicants with practical experience in
preventive conservation.

Functions and Duties:
Arrange archival materials in accordance with accepted archival
principles and practices.
Describe archival materials in accordance with the Rules for Archival
Description (RAD).
Prepare manual and automated finding aids.
Perform basic preventive conservation.
