NEW U.N. STUDY ON DISASTER REDUCTION INITIATIVES

The United Nations has just launched "Living with Risk," a global review
on disaster reduction initiatives. The 400-page report is a study of the
lessons learned by experts and communities in responding to hazards
presented by natural forces such as volcanoes, fires, hurricanes,
tsunamis, landslides and tornadoes, as well as technological accidents
and environmental degradation. The report also looks at the ways in
which political imagination and better communication have already begun
to save lives and build hope for developing countries and examines the
intricate links between economic development and environmental
insecurity. The report is available online at: www.unisdr.org. For the
full press release, visit:

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: GLOBAL HEALTH RESEARCH PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND
PLANNING GRANTS

Applications are invited from health researchers in Canada, Asia, the
Middle East, Africa, and Latin America and the Caribbean for the first
Global Health Research Program Development and Planning Grants. The
grants' program aims to fund North-South health research collaborations

types of grants are available. Planning grants will enable Canadian
groups of researchers to prepare a proposal, in collaboration with low
or middle-income countries, in preparation for a future Network/Centre
grants competition. Research program development grants will enable
Canadian interdisciplinary groups of researchers to develop,
collaboratively with their counterparts in poorer and middle-income
countries, long-term programs of research. Candidates must register
their intent to apply by September 1, 2002. For further information,
