I have the utmost respect and admiration for the writings of A.S. Skinner; I always cite
his works approvingly in my own writings. But I don't quite understand why his authority
should override an argument based on a direct interpretation of the text of WN. I am all
in favor of being sensitive to intellectual context, but it can't replace careful reading
and reflection of the text under scrutiny. I would very much welcome a different
interpretation of the passage from WN. I.ii.2 that I quoted, but I am not very impressed
by arguments from authority.
Cheers!
Eric
