John King asked:

> Who, then, was Frederick Allen? I have consulted all the usual
> reference books, in vain (WHO WAS WHO; Bellamy and Saville, DICTIONARY

Perhaps that is the Left Book Club? A 23-year old history teacher and book collector in
the UK provides this LBC webpage

    http://www.btinternet.com/~pelham123/lbc.htm

which includes links to himself (email) and to a complete list of the 250 LBC titles 1936-
05 to 1948-10 (web) with his own want list highlighted. (Alas, "what remains on the market
is sucked irrevocably into collections" and our hero is not wealthy.)

A history teacher and book collector is a prospect for John, I think. How did I find this
prospect in a few minutes?

Visit the Google web search engine <http://google.com>, enter

    "Frederick Allen" Labour

then select "Google Search".

At a glance, it appears to me that there are a few other prospects for John's inquiry
among the 31 hits. Further "Google Search" for such things as

    "Left Book Club" Allen
    "Frederick Allen" Gollancz

may be the best way to find those prospects on the Web.
