The toast came at the end of a speech by Keynes at a dinner on the occasion of his
retirement as editor of the Economic Journal in 1945: "to economists, who are the
trustees, not of civilisation, but of the possibility of civilisation" (quoted in Harrod's
Life, p. 194)
