PAHO WRAPS UP ITS CENTENNIAL WITH A SYMPOSIUM CELEBRATING PARTNERSHIPS

The Centennial year of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) will
culminate on December 2-3, 2002, with the symposium "Celebrating
Partnerships: 100 years of Health in the Americas." This event will
highlight the international support that has been so crucial to PAHO's
work throughout the years and will provide a unique opportunity for PAHO
to reflect with partners and Member States about the many health
challenges that lie ahead. The symposium will include several panels
involving leading figures from the fields of public health and
development cooperation. These panels will address the achievements and
challenges of public health in the region, the Millennium Development
Goals and principles for international health cooperation, the
implementation of the hemispheric mandates in health, best practices in
interagency collaboration, and new types of partnerships to address new
health challenges. For more information, visit:

PAHO PROMOTES NEW STRATEGIES IN THE FIGHT AGAINST DIABETES

PAHO predicts that the incidence of diabetes will double over the next
25 years. The Diabetes Initiative for the Americas (DIA) of PAHO's
Non-Communicable Diseases program is working to improve the capacity of
the countries of the Americas to prevent and control the disease. The
costs of diabetes are considerable. A recent study conducted by PAHO,
due to be published in the WHO Bulletin, estimated the cost in Latin
America and the Caribbean at US$65 billion in 2000. For more information
on how PAHO is working to fight this disease, visit:
http://www.paho.org/English/DPI/pr021114.htm.

EPIDEMIOLOGY: TRACKING HEALTH PROBLEMS BEFORE THEY APPEAR

Epidemiologists are often called health detectives. Tracking health
problems and describing current epidemiological trends in the hemisphere
is part of PAHO's work. Epidemiological surveillance without gaps is
necessary in the fight against old and newly emerging diseases such as
malaria and HIV/AIDS, as well as modern epidemics such as obesity,
smoking, and violence. PAHO's Special Program for Health Analysis is
working to strengthen the epidemiological capacity of countries in the
Americas. For more information on the Program, visit:
http://www.paho.org/English/DPI/100/100feature45.htm.

The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) are soliciting applications
to plan and develop collaborative research and capacity-building
projects on brain disorders throughout life relevant to low- and
middle-income nations. Applicants are expected to develop innovative,
collaborative research programs that would contribute to the long-term
goal of building sustainable research capacity in neurological
(including sensory, motor, cognitive and behavioral) impairment
throughout life. For more information, visit:
http://www.paho.org/English/HDP/HDR/RPG/fogarty-Brain.htm. Letters of
Intent are due by February 11, 2003, and applications are due March 11,
2003.

covering a number of areas related to TB program design and operation
and TB epidemiology and research. Two people from Latin America or the

VACCINES TAKE CENTRE STAGE AT PAHO AT UPCOMING CONFERENCE

Vaccines take centre stage at the Pan American Health Organization next
week with the conference "Vaccines, Prevention and Public Health: A
vision for the Future." Approximately 300 experts are expected to
attend the conference, one of a series of events marking PAHO's
Centennial. It is co-sponsored by a wide range of agencies and
organizations from both the public and private sectors. For more

WHO REPORT: THE STATE OF THE WORLD'S VACCINES AND IMMUNIZATION

WHO has launched the report "The State of the World's Vaccines and
Immunization." The report highlights the importance of immunization as
one of the most effective public health interventions ever and advocates
for international support to accelerate progress for child health and
disease control in developing and industrialized countries. The Report
examines the progress made in the field of immunization and presents the
remaining challenges of the access gaps and emerging and neglected
diseases. It also outlines the vaccines research agenda for the 21st
century, including the expanding role of alliances between the public
and private sectors. The report is available at:
